Hosting a world

Post by whtknight »

Hi,

Some of you might know me from Zoric 7, i used this name or vicious... no wait, i used Knight also maybe... (I was the guy that won.. better?), Anyways, i was wondering whos ass i gotta kiss or how much cash i gotta dish out to host a world. I have always loved A-tractor and i greatly desire to play again, but i would like to watch the poeple live in my own world. I Host a Lineage 2 privite server so I'm not new to hosting servers, and Lineage 2 is certainly way more demanding and i host it jsut fine for people. So, aim me at N33d4sp33d or msn at whtknight_0@hotmail.com with details on how i could host a world.

Thank you

ps. I think i was called Knight...

welcome back knight

the pc stats are no big deal at all.
a 450mhz athlom with 64mb ram on a connection with 32kb/sec upstream can host 10 worlds lag free even with 25 players connected to islands on the pc.

and its uploading that matters, not downloading.
if thiers 5 players on an island, its sending 5x more then its recieving. 10 players on, 10x, etc

hi whtknight... you need to complete the world owners application form on the home page of this site. This is the only way of asking for a world

I beleive I'm a capable host, anyone who wants to test can come play on my free lineage 2 server, AIM or MSN me for details

could you use a web hoster to run a planet?

Post by Hija »

I know that you can have a few games that are mmogs that have only html interfaces. I don't know how they work but I might be able to host a planet thru a web page host.

doubt it, for a world to work threw a webserver host you'd need:
1. to have them actually allow you to install and run programs on the servers (which would mean useing thier cpu and ram and possibly installing files into the servers windows/system directory)
2. a way to interact with the server. the main issue with others hosting worlds is, and probably will be for a while yet, the owner not being able to do server side only stuff (like assigning building models, or doing stuff like passwording the island or setting up the webexport). even installing it might be hard, because you'd have to register the world from that pc, and directx8.1 or higher is also needed for worlds.
3. you'd also need a way to remotly start and stop the server. some stuff needs the server to actually be closed and reopened, not just *recycled.

Unless you had your own dedicated server, then you wouldn't have a problem.

Been thinking of applying for my own world, main problem is the time factor, i've a lot of work to do on my own game.

Few quick questions though, would the server work ok if the cpu is used at full power at interval's and is there a limit to the no of worlds a server can host? I maybe getting 1 or 2 more dedicated servers for my own game and could possibly host some worlds (bandwidth wise i'm barly scratching the surface atm), but if i were to offer i'd need to make sure it wouldn't affect my own game worlds adversly.

Cpu use of the server is pretty minimal, and it wouldnt be affected noticeably if the machine was busy doin other things a lot of the time. (Even running it alongside the client doesnt tend to cause any problems - other than perhaps a small increase in ping times). The server also has a few different modes to allow it to run 'lazy' (where it takes as little cpu time as possible, but increases the ping response slightly) or busily, where it occupies a lot of the cpu to decrease response times. Most econ worlds don't need the latter option at all.

Bandwidth use of the server is mostly determined by 2 factors - number of players on the world and the number of file downloads. You can store models, textures and radio downloads on a separate web server (which is highly recommended) and you can limit the number of players on your world if neccessary.

"main problem is the time factor"
We do tend to get more applications from ppl with time & ideas but without the resources to actually host the place, so collobarating with one of them might be a decent solution.

I like the look of your game btw, puggy :] I'd play it if i ever had time to play games and if i wasnt worried about subconscious plagiarism :)

Well i'll probably offer to host worlds then in a week or two as i'm planning on getting 1 more server, a nice fast one at that too, should be able to squeeze 2 worlds on it (my game) but i do have a lot of tweaking to do so i should be able to reduce some of the cpu power, it's making doing hard labour ranking stuff, which isn't really needed to be updated as much as it is.

I wouldn't worry too much about plagiarism as all games do it to some degree, i've even got a few idea's for expansions from this game. The one thing most player's don't realise it the amount of work that has to be done in the back end. I don't even get a chance to do much playing on my own game, it's basically a look in to make sure everything is ok, maybe a chat and then 30 mins, if i'm lucky to get away from that game and play this one
