I tried that....it doesnt seem to work

I just bought a gamepad(not joystick) and i was ondering how i could set it up to not only control my ship but also fire lasers and missiles and so on...I don't see it anywhere in the joystick setup options, which is how i set it up to fly my ship. Any help would be greatly appriceated.
