Interested in trying a bit of texturing..?
Here are a couple of car models for you to have a go at 'skinning'. Feel free to experiment with them..
Old family saloon... or posh 70s car... or... something.
Sorta sportscar, Mad Max batmobile Porsche kinda thing.
Each zip contains two texture templates (one with notes, one without), and a static .atm model. You can use the Model Converter (see below) to view and refresh the model while you're changing the texture.
Model Converter
The Universal Model converter - version 1.9, now with help manual
This is the program you'll need to be able to export .atm models - the custom format used by the game. Atm models are highly compressed (so ingame downloads are quicker) and allow you
to attach custom special effects to your models - like giving them wheels or propellors linked to the control physics in-game.
Any problems you find with the template, or model, or any questions.. or if you come up with something good and would like to share it with other players in the game, mail
fooli[at]theuniversal[dot]net, or post your textures on the forums. Exceptional efforts may even win a prize or something :]
Want to contribute to the game?
The Universal is made by professional game developers and volunteers who work for nothing except the fun of it (and the occasional bottle of whiskey :] ).
We've always got a need for new models & textures, so if you have the skills and are kind enough to make a contribution, feel free to join in on the forums and in-game.
Talk to world owners - many will have new ideas and needs for new models, and will be grateful for new things to try out.
